Shanthibhavan Palliative Hosptial

The first Palliative Hospital in India

 

Shanthibhavan Palliative Hospital is  the first hospital in India for the palliative bedridden patients without bills and cash counters. Everything is free for the palliative patients including palliative care, all kinds of mental and medical support and food. The Hospital  runs  on the motto,‘by the people, for the people’. This hospital extends its support to many homes where bedridden patients need care and love. This is a unique hospital in India in its nature and by its service ,like high-end palliative care and mental support. And in reality, the palliative patients, who avail care, feel that Shanthibhavan is not only a Palliative hospital but also  an abode where they get the warmth of their home.

A group of expert doctors, nurses, priests, nuns and volunteers are always willing to support the bedridden patients who are in palliative hospital or at homes. 15 vehicles are moving with expert palliative team from Shanthibhavan Palliative Hospital to serve the bedridden patients who are living in the different parts of the Thrissur District. Here we are providing emergency home care for all bedridden patients in the district who register their names in the Hospital records. As mentioned earlier, this is an exclusive hospital for palliative bedridden patients with 49 beds.

 

High end palliative care

Free Dialysis Service

We are providing free dialysis for poor kidney patients. It is a cent percent free dialysis service for poor kidney patients. Since the registration for the free dialysis has been reached in a large number, we are trying to provide more support to poor kidney patients. We have the facility to support 40 kidney patients and looking for getting support from the public for the smooth running of this project. The dialysis machines are working by the support of solar energy.

 Here we have some developmental projects to upgrade our solar system that we can connect more dialysis machines to this solar energy system. The service of Nephrologists, trained nurses, technicians, medicines and transportation are totally free for kidney patients.

 Fully Fledged ICU, Casualty

Casualty, fully fledged ICU, centralised oxygen system, ventilator facility and all other emergency care are available in Shanthibhavan Palliative Hospital. Department of emergency medicine has been started for palliative patients who require urgent and high quality medical care to protect the valuable life. All essential and functional equipments, ventilator, defibrillator, monitors, scan , vital essential medicines, emergency medicines and all other facilities are arranged for the high-end service of palliative patients.

Physiotherapy

A full equipped physiotherapy unit is active in Hospital, and it is not only for the palliative patients but also give support  the  youth  who  are recovering from accidents. This department is aiming to provide a better quality of life. Physiotherapists tend to spend a considerable amount of time with their patients on a regular basis and assure morning and evening care.  Here we are considering their entire physical, emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.

Early Medical Detection and Research Institute

Early Medical Detection Camps are conducted  for the public on the basis of Panchayath / Muncipality / Corporation limits. Blood and Urine tests are done freely for camp members through these detection camps. Diseases which cause ladies, such as Breast Cancer, Uterus Cancer, and Thyroid Cancer are diagnosed and treated with Ultra-Modern Medical Equipments. A total of 48 parameters in Blood/Urine are included in the test. Deadly Diseases including Cancer are taken care in the initial stage itself by our Professional medical team. After getting these test reports, expert doctors examine the results and give necessary advice to prevent various diseases and changes they have to make in their life styles.

Local Autonomy Institutions and Voluntary Organizations can avail the facility of Early Medical Detection Camps under their respective locality by joining hands with Shanthibhavan Palliative Hospital.  

 Regional Centres

There are Abhayam – Shanthibhavan regional centres which facilitate at different parts of the district. These centres are like a small clinic and have a miniature structure of Shanthibhavan palliative hospital. Palliative home care, non -profit modern laboratory, outpatient department, non- profit pharmacy, free doctor consultation, emergency home care are the key services of this centres. Regional centres are concentrating the patients of two nearby panchayath.. Abhayam   - Shanthibhavan plans to start 50 regional centres in every district with the support of general public. Regional centres started working in Ernakulam too.

Medicine Support                              

General pharmacies are attached to our regional centres, and patients those who are coming for consultation would get prescribed medicine on subsidiary rates. The service of the pharmacy limited to outpatients for the first phase. And we are planning to distribute all medicine required for palliative fellowship members on non profit basis. Our registered palliative bedridden patients who are availing home care from Shanthibhavan palliative Hospital are eligible for free medicine.

 Ultrasound Scanning

The radiology department has been opened in Shanthibhavan palliative hospital to extend its support for palliative bedridden liver patients.  After deploying the Ultrasound Scan machine, the radiology department is well equipped and it is managed by a senior Radiologist. This facility is very supportive for both liver cancer, liver cerosis patients and also for early detection purpose.  We are also planning to start Ultra Sound Scan Mobile unit to extend the medical support to their doorsteps.

Early Cancer Detection Institute

This is our big project which will be completing in an area of 3 Lakhs sq / feet and it is a prime project of Shanthibhavan palliative hospital, which will be helpful to thousands of people. The laboratory rates are reaching the sky and the poor people couldn’t afford the rates for early detection tests. But this Early Cancer Detection Institute would help the general public to do the tests for a cheapest rate.

 Free Ambulance Service, Mobile Freezer

Our Regional centres are well equipped with Free ambulance service, Mobile Freezers and capable to meet other emergency needs of palliative bedridden patients.

 

Our Mission

Santhibhavan Palliative Hospital is dedicated to improve quality of life of palliative bedridden patients and gives relief from pain and other distressing symptoms. We also support life and keeping people as healthy as possible, regarding dying as a normal process. We don’t quicken or postpone death. We combine psychological and spiritual aspects of care and offer a support system to help people live as actively as possible until death. We assure the support system for helping the family to cope up with  during a person’s treatment and in bereavement. We have a strong team to fulfil the needs of the person who is bedridden  which will be a great blessing to  their families. Our income is only from the donation, not from our services. We are looking for the public support to fulfil the dream to become a general hospital, so that we can provide the emergency care, casualty etc to all people nearby.  We have opened our doors to the public, everybody can come and support our new projects. There are no barriers of caste, creed and nothing like that.

 

History

We  started this project in 2014 with the blessing of Arch Bishop Mar Andrews Thazhath, Chairman of Abhayam Palliative Care led by Fr.JoyKoothur, Rev.Sr.Biatrice Scalinci and Rev.Sr.Maria Chiara Kalliyathuparambil along with Franciscan Sisters of St.Clare Congregation. With the initiative of the above  said persons, we have sowed the seed of ShanthiBhavan Palliative Hospital in Pallisserry, Thrissur, Kerala, India. Its foundation stone was blessed on the auspicious occasion of the Golden Jubilee year of Priesthood of Arch Bishop Late Mar Raphael Cheenath who is the native of Pallissery by Cardinal Major Archbishop Mar. George Alanchery.
